The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the decision announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to lift restrictions on Taiwan-US official exchanges, 10 January.

In a statement released 9 January, Secretary Pompeo described Taiwan as a vibrant democracy and reliable partner of the US, and announced that the State Department would no longer uphold complex internal restrictions aimed to regulate interactions with Taiwan.

In a statement, MOFA said that Taiwan is continuing to pursue a pragmatic approach towards deepening mutual trust with the US on the basis of shared values such as freedom, democracy and respect for human rights. The ministry further added that the current state of relations are rock solid and are going from strength to strength on the global stage.

Likewise, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu signalled his appreciation via a tweet from MOFA’s official account, in which he described the prior restrictions as unnecessarily limiting Taiwan-US engagements, and issued his thanks to the State Department, Secretary Pompeo, and bipartisan members of the US Congress.
