Italy’s Meloni reaffirms support for Ukraine in call with Zelenskiy

Giorgia Meloni (sa phictiúr), the Italian prime minister, reiterated on Tuesday (27 December) her government’s support for Ukraine during a phone call with President Volodymyr Zeleskiy, her office said.

Her office stated that Meloni had renewed the Italian government’s support for Kyiv in all areas, including the military, political, and humanitarian. “Meloni also (reaffirmed) the Italian government’s complete support for Kyiv in order to repair energy infrastructure, and (to work for the future reconstruction of Ukraine.”

The previous government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi sent five aid packages including military supplies to Kyiv. Meloni’s government is currently working on a sixth delivery.

Meloni’s office confirmed Tuesday that she had “confirmed her intent” to visit Kyiv. Zelenskiy was invited by the office to Rome – he visited the USA last week in his first overseas trip after Russia invaded on 24 February.
