The European Commission has approved a €35.5 million direct grants Latvian scheme to support companies of all sizes active in the agricultural, fishery, food industry and school catering sectors in the context of the coronavirus outbreak. The scheme was approved under the State aid Creat Sealadach ar ghlac an Coimisiún leis an 19 Márta 2020, mar arna leasú an 3 Aibreán 2020.

The aim of the scheme is to help these businesses cope with the liquidity problems brought about by the coronavirus crisis by compensating them for losses linked to the slowing down of the economic activity. The Commission found that the Latvian measure is in line with the conditions set out in the Temporary Framework. The Commission concluded that the measure is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State, in line with Article 107(3)(b) TFEU and the conditions set out in the Temporary Framework.

Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: “The essential emergency measures adopted to protect our healthcare during the coronavirus outbreak are putting a strain on our economy. However, people still need to buy food. The €35.5m direct grant scheme approved today will support Latvian businesses active in agriculture, fisheries, food and school catering, and will help them continue their activities in these difficult times.”
