Euro_6_díosal_sceite_800Members of the European Parliament’s environment committee yesterday (15 December) rejected a proposal by the EU’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles for a new test procedure that would allow Euro 6 diesel cars to emit over double the Euro 6 limit from 2017 to 2020, and 50% more thereafter. This is due so a so-called ‘conformity factor’ which allows for technical margins of error.

Anna Lisa Boni, EUROCITIES secretary general, stressed the urgent need for a stricter proposal: “The environment committee’s rejection of the new Euro 6 testing proposal is a signal to the Council and Commission that we need to do better. Air pollution is responsible for over 400,000 premature deaths in the EU every year, and is costing our economies up to €940 billion annually. Cities rely heavily on Euro standards to deliver the air quality improvements required by EU legislation, so we should only settle for a more stringent proposal.”
